The fall season always brings thoughts of cozy evenings, falling leaves, fall sports, the Holidays, and gathering with family and friends. Many of us also reflect upon the past year and how our lives have changed over the years. As stated by the Greek Philosopher, Heraclitus, “Change is the only constant in life.” This is true for LARC, as it is for the clients we have served for the last 66 years.

When LARC first opened its doors in 1956, it filled a void and provided education to children who were intellectually/developmentally disabled. As public schools began providing special education, LARC evolved to fill their needs as young adults following graduation. We transitioned from a school to a workshop and provided employment opportunities. In the years that followed, we expanded to provide 24-hour residential opportunities in beautiful homes in the community purchased by LARC. Our evolution over the years would not have been possible without the ongoing generous support of our donors.

While many of our long-term clients prefer to remain in meaningful curriculums here at our Wentworth Campus in Lansing, many young adults with developmental disabilities graduating from their high school programs are now seeking employment in the community. This places an opportunity for us to reimagine our “workshop,” and explore many exciting possibilities as we seek to lay the framework for Customized Employment. Additionally, the reconfiguration of our space will help us to keep up with the rapidly changing way in which our State is funding and regulating community day services.

Our Board of Directors and senior management met recently to revisit our mission and vision as part of a strategic planning session to prepare for these very important changes. As a result, we have committed ourselves to a mission that paves pathways through individualized supports and services so people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can experience a self-directed lifestyle. We envision an inclusive society that embraces the individuality of each person with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Today, we are asking you to join us on this journey, and we are asking you to consider supporting LARC during this season of giving. There has never been a greater time than the present to make your gift. Each donation will make a difference, and no donation is too small. If you are unable to donate this year, please consider sharing your time & talents. Our promise to you is that we will be good stewards of your generosity.

Again, thank you for sharing our commitment to pave pathways for the individuals we support so they may become confident, curious, and productive members of our community.
